6 Myths about Sports Agents:
What are the 6 most popular myths about sports agents:
Myth #1:
The “stronger” an agent's relationship is with the team, the more likely a transaction can be made despite the athlete and his or her conditions. THAT IS FALSE!
The sports world is like any other industry, with its own specifications. However, the law of supply and demand applies equally to this market. For example, if a team does not recruit someone for a specific position, it would be difficult to guarantee a spot for an athlete wanting to join the team. Beware of those who present themselves with wacky promises and guarantees.
It is better to promise little and deliver more… The sports world is filled with false information, scammers, and unreliable strategies! It is clear that an agent needs to be competent and meet his or her client’s interests above all. If an agent's only goal is to get a commission, he or she will make impossible promises and try to boost the athlete's ego to get ahead. That is a shame!
For optimal success, it is essential to have a success-oriented vision and focus on providing the best sporting, and financial circumstances for the athlete.
Myth #2:
One needs to be a former athlete in order to be a good sports agent. ALSO FALSE!
An agent only needs to be "equipped," which means that, even if they used to be athletes, taking a week-long course on "How to Be an Agent" is not enough. As we all know, all former high-level sports players do not necessarily make good coaches or trainers. In the same way, being a former athlete doesn't mean that someone will be a good agent.
An agent does not need to know how to shoot a penalty shot. He or she does not even have to be cool or well-liked by everyone... The agent is not an athlete and does not take him or herself for one!
Furthermore, having business experience, know-how, negotiation skills, and advanced financial knowledge are the best ways to better serve the athlete's interests.
Finally, in order to succeed, the sports agent must surround him or herself with the best analysts, attorneys, business advisors, and physiological professionals. He or she must also have a sufficient network and be willing to collaborate with others in order to expand his or her options and, thus, prevent missing out on opportunities.
Myth #3:
It is the agent that makes the player! FALSE!
A successful professional athlete is disciplined, organized, attentive, well-surrounded, and (possibly) talented. If an athlete is consistent, the agent's job will be much easier! However, it is important to note that even the best negotiator will never be able to place a basketball player on the best European soccer team! Everyone understands that there is no magic in the sports industry!
It is therefore critical to recognize that the recipe for success combines the athlete's professionalism with the agent's work of protection and negotiation.
Myth #4:
Athletes may only sign with specific teams if they are under contract with specific, well-identified sports agents. INCREDIBLY FALSE!
It is clear that human relationships are generally important in business. However, it would be a mistake to believe that two "friends" involved in a business negotiation would make irrational decisions out of friendship.
Those who say the opposite are not telling the truth! The only true reason for this would be in the case of collusion, and it would almost always be to the athlete’s detriment.
Finally, the sports industry, like any other, is full of marketers and, on occasion, street peddlers! Some people frequently convince others that they are the masters of whatever situation, often using expressions such as “I am in control,” “I have a lot of influence in this sports club,” “Don’t worry, he is a family member,” and so on and so forth. Don’t believe any of it!
Myth #5:
An agent can guarantee a player's spot on the national team. THAT IS ALSO FALSE!
A sports agent once told me, "The players have realized that, in order to be selected for the national team, they must sign with me!" This is a sad joke! I have numerous examples to show that this is not the case! It is critical not to underestimate the power that certain individuals think they wield. Sometimes, they only influence their loved ones, but believe that they control the world…
One needs to be clear-headed because this isn't magic! If an athlete has demonstrated excellent results and conducts himself or herself professionally, there is a good chance that he or she will represent his or her country in international competitions.
Myth #6:
An athlete does not require an agent! BIG MISTAKE!
Some athletes who have had bad experiences with agents in the past don't realize how important it is to have a real representative. Instead, they may hire a lawyer or choose to have a friend or parent represent them. Careful! An attorney is not a businessman, and legal advice is in no way a substitute for business negotiation skills. A "legal" mind does not always have business logic and certainly not a sporting approach. Confusing these two skills is a mistake that can seriously jeopardize an athlete's career.
Furthermore, even if an agent must maintain good communication with the athlete's parents in some cases, he does not replace them. Finally, some athletes believe that their ability to grasp the nuances of their sport entitles them to represent their own interests. This is a serious mistake! Business and negotiation acumen is real expertise; it cannot be improvised.
Who am I?
I have a master's degree in business development and telecommunications, and I founded my first telecommunications company over ten years ago. I made my first million dollars a few years after the launch of VoxSun, of which I am still the owner. In 2014, with BoostMyCom, I began to offer the same online marketing strategy that I had used for my first success with VoxSun.
I started with businesses and organizations to broaden my network of athletes, including sprinters, boxers, basketball players, and, finally, football players. In 2016, I published "How to Hit it Big in Business," a book about business development and negotiation that would become widely sold and distributed in North America. Finally, in 2018, I launched BoostMySport to represent athletes in front of various organizations.
Today, I collaborate with the best sports analysts on the market, as well as the best physical trainers, accountants, and attorneys.
What am I looking for?
Excellence! And excellence is never found in quantity but rather in the "right measure"! It requires concentration and expertise... My team and I have decided to only take on a limited number of cases in order to provide the best service to our clients and use all of our resources to assist the athlete. I assess an athlete's potential and professionalism, and if he hires me, I give it my all to ensure total success by being transparent and having integrity.
